Tall Garden Phlox is a great perennial that provides wonderful blooms in mid to late summer depending on the variety. It is hard to get a second bloom however if you cut them early on as cut flowers or soon as soon as the blooms have gone by you do have a chance for a second bloom cycle.
Most of our Tall Garden Phlox Grow 2 to 3 feet in height. Because of the height these varieties of Garden Phlox are often used in perennial gardens as background plants. You will find they will look great in back of plants that have a medium height 1 to 2 feet, such as Coneflower, Coreopsis and perennial bachelor button.
Planting and Caring for Your Garden Phlox
Tall Garden Phlox are subject to a powdery mildew there for when planning your garden make sure you pick a spot with some air flow and not a lot of direct over head water, such as a roof with no gutters. Usually as long as you do not plant them right up against a fence, wall or house your phlox will be quite happy. This is not a severe problem if I see it I Simply cut them back and the plant will just bloom a little bit later.
You can Plant Your Garden Phlox in any season. Just keep in mind during the hotter months they will require more watering until the roots become established. When planting Dig a hole at least twice the size of your plants root system. I mix some top soil, compost and fertilizer together to replace some of the soil you have removed, If you have good soil already you can forget adding topsoil and just add the compost and fertilizer to the soil you just dug up. Place the plant in the hole so the plants crown is about an inch and a half below the soil. If your hole is to deep simple ad some soil until you have the proper depth and fill in around the plant with the soil you have just mixed up. Remember to water it in good. You may see some wilting of the foliage at first and that is okay. Just make sure you water your Phlox when the soil become dry. You will be amazed at how fast your plant will grow with the extra nutrients you have added to the soil!
