This Dianthus has fire red flowers with a deeper crimson eye, making this a saturated red bicolor. The Fire Star has evergreen, glaucous grey-green foliage that provides a great contrast for these bright flowers. The Fire Star Dianthus has even a more wonderful sutheprise, the foliage gives off a spicy scent of cloves.Similar to the
Eastern Star Dianthus Though budding is most prolific in early summer, plants will rebloom in the fall if spent flowers are removed. D. 'Fire Star' is slightly taller and bushier than D. 'Eastern Star' and has proven to be a vigorous grower.
The Dianthus 'Star' series is a recent Plant Haven introduction from breeder John Whetman of HR Whetman and Son in Devon, England. Though they are described as alpine dianthus, they are actually more complex and are an improvement over the species.
